Tornjak

Appearance

Summary of Appearance

One of the first things you notice about a Tornjak is its imposing size. A Tornjak is a large, well-proportioned dog. They are both powerful and agile. The Tornjak is referred to as having a square build, meaning its body length should be roughly equal to its height. These dogs are large and well-muscled, reflecting their strength and resilience. Males typically stand at around 25 to 28 inches at the withers, while females are slightly smaller. The Tornjak's robust build allows it to protect flocks from various threats, from predators to harsh weather conditions.

Another striking feature of a Tornjak is its coat. The Tornjak has long, dense, double coated fur consisting of a coarse top layer and fuller, softer undercoat. The coat is multi-colored with shades of brown, black, red and white. Although Tornjaks are never a single color, typically these darker colors are seen in large patchy patterns over a dominant white background. Tornjaks coats are thicker around the body and neck, forming somewhat of a mane, and shorter around the limbs and head. The Tornjaks tail has long, flowing hair and is usually held upright in a flag position when alert.

A Tornjaks head is considered elongated with a 1:1 ratio between the skull and muzzle.Their muzzle is rectangular with the slope from head to muzzle being slightly pronounced. Their triangular-shaped ears flop downwards. Tornjaks have dark pigmentation on their nose and paws.
