Tornjak Energy Requirements
Although each dog is unique, Tornjaks are usually considered to have moderate energy levels. The exercise requirements of a Tornjak are best described by looking at the job they were bred to do. Tornjaks may not have a constant need for physical activity but their role as protectors demands a lot from them.
Mental vigilance is very important. The most significant part of a livestock guardian's "activity" is staying watchful and alert. Their calm demeanor and casual pace helps to keep livestock from being stressed. That said, don’t be fooled by a resting Tornjak, they can be on their feet in the blink of an eye.
Tornjaks frequently patrol the perimeter of the territory they are guarding. These patrols are not vigorous exercises but rather steady strolls and can cover large territories. Taking long walks with your Tornjak or allowing them to roam within their designated areas can fulfill their exercise needs and align with their guardian duties.
While most of their time is spent in a calm and watchful state, Tornjaks need to have bursts of high energy when responding to potential threats. They need to be strong and fast to chase away harmful predators at any moment. In order to stay fit for this, they do occasionally get “zoomies”.
Tornjaks are known for being very social with their human families. Many enjoy social interactions and playful moments. Keep in mind that predators are most active at dusk or dawn, so your guardian will also be most active during these times.
In summary, the activity needs of Tornjaks are distinct, primarily focusing on vigilance, short bursts of high energy and frequent patrols.
