Tornjak

Grooming

It takes a lot of hair to look this good.

Tornjaks are known for their stunning, thick fur that keeps them warm in winter and cool in summer. Overall, Tornjaks have moderate grooming needs. They have what is called a 'double-coat' which means they have two different types of hair that grow independently of one another. The top coat is longer and more coarse while the bottom is thicker and soft. Caring for a double coat requires some special grooming in order to keep it healthy. Here are a few important notes about caring for your double coated Tornjak.

Regular Brushing

Brushing is an important part of maintaining your Tornjak's double-coated fur. Use a slicker brush or an undercoat rake to remove loose and dead hair. Regular brushing not only reduces shedding but also prevents matting, which can lead to skin issues. Tornjaks benefit from brushing about once a week.

Bathing

Tornjaks do not require frequent baths. Their coats produce natural oils that protect their skin. Do not overbath them or you will wash these oils off and their skin may become dry or irritated.

No Shaving

As a general rule of thumb, never shave a double coated dog unless required by medical necessity.

Seasonal Shedding

Double-coated breeds typically have two major shedding seasons, in the spring and fall. During these times, you'll notice an increase in shedding. More frequent brushing can help remove the loose undercoat during these times.

Ear Infections

Tornjaks love being outside rain or shine. Some of them also enjoy playing in water. Any dog that is frequently around water, is at risk for moisture build up in their ears and therefore at risk of ear infections.

In Conclusion

All that being said, Tornjaks were bred to withstand living outdoors with their flock. Their coats benefits from regular attention to grooming but are low maintence overall considering their length and beauty.
