Meet Tornjaks
Kisa & Zadok
This story is one of many in our "Living with Guardians" series. The series asks Tornjak owners to share their experience with the breed. For those who have never met a Tornjak, hopefully these stories can provide further insight on this ancient breed.
Please introduce yourself and your dog(s).
Alice Guthrie, Kisa and Zadok
How long have you had Tornjaks?
Since Sept 2022
How did you first hear about the breed?
Saw an ad about 10 years ago, intrigued, but not able to follow up then.
Are your Tornjaks working as livestock guardians or are they pets? If working, please tell us about your guardian needs - What type of livestock? What types of predators?
That's the plan .... proceeding carefully to make it work. Small flock of sheep, goats, poultry. Main predators are coyotes, but occasional wolf or cougar.
Had you met a Tornjak before you got one?
Yes
Where did yours come from - North America? Europe?
Kisa from Croatia, Zadok born in Canada from Croatian parents.
What sort of research did you do on the breed before deciding it was right for you?
Have previous experience with guardian dogs, did research on history and characteristics, found and visited someone with a pair before making final decision.
What about the breed was as you expected? (Temperament, energy, grooming, etc)
No surprises.
What about the breed was different than you expected? (Temperament, energy, grooming, etc)
No surprises.
What lifestyle do you feel would NOT be a good fit for a Tornjak?
Any home with people who don't want to be involved with their dog. Dog chained in the back yard and ignored. People who are too busy with kids/activities/hobbies to spend time.
Please feel free to share any other experiences you believe would be relevant to a new owner.
Important to spend time AS A PUPPY teaching appropriate manners and extensive socialization, particularly if the dog will be a companion.
